Leanne Hanson Portrait

Leanne Hanson — Paintings Photographed by Mitch Rossow

Leanne Hanson paints luminous landscapes and florals in a style she describes as realistic impressionism — the color, light, and layered glazes of Impressionism combined with the compositional discipline of her formal training in landscape design. Her hallmarks are high-contrast color and radiant light, built up in layers that give her oils a depth and energy that translates well whether the viewer is standing in front of an original or browsing prints online.

Hanson grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, where her father was a watercolorist and head of the art department at the University of Minnesota. Art was never a question. She sold her first painting in high school, earned a degree in landscape design, and then spent three decades balancing painting with family and business before making oil painting her full-time practice. Commissions have ranged from portraits and architectural cityscapes to natural landscapes and abstracts, with work in private and corporate collections nationally.

She is a member of the North East Minneapolis Art Association and the Minnesota Artist Guild, and has been juried into over 30 art fairs across the country — Florida, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and a consistent presence at Minneapolis-area fairs including the Edina Art Fair, Stone Arch Bridge Festival, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Art Fair, and Minnehaha Falls Art Fair. She has won multiple awards in juried competition, including at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition.

A significant part of Leanne’s fair business runs on prints — landscape and floral editions sold alongside her originals, all produced from photographs taken in this studio. Getting that photograph right is the difference between a print that sells and one that doesn’t.
